Volunteers are needed and are greatly appreciated at your child's school. Donating a few precious hours of your time can make all the difference.
Thank you for your interest in volunteering in our schools. The Penn-Harris-Madison School Corporation requires all volunteers to complete a limited background check prior to approval to volunteer.
School Safety is a Priority! In order to be considered as an approved volunteer, you are provided two options to complete the limited background check or renewal of your approval status.
As a condition of serving in this role, you grant permission to Penn-Harris-Madison School Corporation to conduct a background check including state/local criminal history records and national sex offender registry. As a result of your agreement, you agree to:
Option 1 - Pay $12.95 for SafeVisitor to conduct the background search, which Penn-Harris-Madison School Corporation will honor for 3 years. Click here to visit SafeVisitor’s website to complete the online electronic search.
Using this link is the preferred method to reduce search time and fingerprinting requirements. If out of state records are located, additional fees may apply.
Option 2 - For those preferring not to pay and/or use SafeVisitor’s expedited electronic background check services, Penn-Harris-Madison Schools offers another option to complete the paper Volunteer Background Check form. Click here to download and print the paper form.
You will need to download, print and complete the form in its entirety, disclosing all required background information, and return it to your School’s Front Office. Using this form may result in an extended period of time while the Indiana State Police provide results. In addition, the Indiana State Police may require fingerprinting at the cost of $21.95 to the volunteer. If you choose to complete this form, please print the Volunteer Application Form and turn into the front office at your child’s school at least 6 weeks prior to your volunteer service. Once the application has been reviewed and approved, you will receive the following message from SafeVisitor along with a Volunteer badge/barcode. Your Volunteer badge/barcode will be used to scan into SafeVisitor in the front office. Office staff will require a state issued ID upon your first day of volunteering. Thereafter, you will simply scan in using your badge/barcode and obtain a volunteer sticker.
As a result of your background check and approval status, Penn-Harris-Madison School Corporation will honor your approval status for a three (3) year period. This is a minimum requirement as some schools may require an annual check of volunteers. You will receive an electronic renewal letter once your approval status has expired.
Volunteers are not allowed to begin their service to the school until the background check is completed and approved by the administration. If you are approved, you will receive a Volunteer ID/Barcode from SafeVisitor to your email account.
All volunteers are asked to comply with the following guidelines:
- Volunteers must remember to have your driver's license with you the first time you enter school along with your printed Volunteer Badge/Barcode.
- Volunteers are not to bring young children with them when they volunteer.
- All volunteers must observe all safety and security rules and procedures.
As a P-H-M volunteer, you agree to the terms above and to complete any necessary steps listed above.
